Once you’ve decided to implement an ID solution in your organisation, it’s important to ensure you’ve got the right printer for the job. If you’re unsure about what printer is best for you, you can talk to the expert team at Plastic-ID to find out more.

Plastic card printer requirements

As the technology for ID card printers continues to evolve, a wide variety of printers on the market offer different services depending on your needs. However, before you buy a printer, you must identify what you require from an ID card printer.

Volume

An important factor for deciding which ID card printer is best for your needs is the volume of output it can handle. If you need to print a high volume of plastic cards over a period of time, some printer models will be built with that in mind. Other printers are more suited to short, sporadic print runs and will therefore reduce any unnecessary costs.

Print speed

Print speed is an important factor to consider alongside print volume, as this determines how long it takes to print each individual card. Faster print speeds are a principal requirement for many industries, especially those that issue cards and badges on demand.

Security

For many organisations, security is becoming more important than ever. Several printers across a range of budgets offer various security features, including UV and hologram overlays, encoding, digital scrambling of data and physical security features like locks on the printer's body.

Price

The price of the printer depends on the features of the printer, so if you know what is most important to your requirements, then you can make the best decision for your budget.

To reduce the cost, if necessary, you can decide whether to pursue certain features like duplex printing (consider manually flipping the card), enhanced print quality (monochrome text does not require a high dpi) and any future upgrading that may occur (some printers offer modules that can be installed later).

Although the cost may exclude some features at the outset, you can easily decide on a printer that suits your requirements now and in the future as your business grows.

Printer rentals

If you only need a plastic card printer for short-term use, you can rent an ID card printer for a great cost.

When you rent a printer from Plastic-ID, you can build the ideal package that’s perfectly suited to your requirements. When you receive your rental printer, you’ll be able to use it straight from the box.

Please allow a minimum of 24 hours for dispatch. If you require your printer rental urgently, please contact us to discuss available options.

Customer service

As part of the ID Card Centre group and as a leading industry provider for ID card printers, Plastic-ID’s team of experts can provide expert advice and guidance on which printer is best for your requirements and your budget. We will match the price and get you the best deal if you receive a better quote elsewhere.

The Epson ColorWorks C4000e Overview - Eye-Catching Colour Labels, Printed On Demand The C4000e is ideal for businesses that want to produce high-quality labels in-house and on-demand in small-to-mid volumes, without waiting on a print run or ordering more pre-printed stock than they need. Features and Benefits of the CW-C4000e Colour Label PrinterDesktop colour label printer with four-colour print output Print resolution up to 1,200 x 1,200 DPI, printing width up to 108mm Available with gloss or matte black ink, set at first cartridge install Individual cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink cartridges 2.7-inch LCD display panel for straightforward day-to-day use Drivers for Windows, Linux and Mac, plus ESC/Label and ZPL II emulation Built-in autocutter, replaceable without an engineer visit Optional Wi-Fi dongle for wireless printing from anywhere in the building Colour labels, printed on demand, whenever you need them A warehouse team runs out of hazard labels halfway through a new batch of stock. A café updates its allergen information and needs new stickers on every jar before the day's out. Situations like these are exactly what the Epson C4000e is built for, printing labels in-house the moment you need them rather than waiting on a supplier's next run.  As a label printer with four-colour print output, it produces high-resolution, highly detailed labels regardless of the label size or material, so speed doesn't come at the cost of quality. That same colour matching functionality, including an ICC profile and spot colour matching tool, keeps your brand colours consistent from the first label to the thousandth. \Built for easy, everyday use This is a highly intuitive label printer straight out of the box. The 2.7-inch LCD display panel makes day-to-day operation simple, even for someone who's never touched a label printer before. Media rolls swap over in seconds, and the built-in autocutter can be replaced by your own team when it wears out, with no need to book in an engineer. Between the display, the media handling and the autocutter, the C4000e brings a genuinely easy-to-use set of features and enhanced connectivity to a job that's traditionally been fiddlier than it needs to be. Connects into your existing systems The C4000e is designed to connect into existing systems rather than force you to build around it. Drivers are available for Windows, Linux and Mac, with ESC/Label and ZPL II emulation covering most label design software already in use across warehouses and retail back offices. SDKs for iOS and Android bring tablet printing into reach for teams who need to print on the move, and an optional Wi-Fi dongle adds wireless printing so the printer doesn't need to sit next to whoever's using it. Gloss or matte black ink, on a wide range of media The C4000e comes in two versions: one with gloss black ink, one with matte black ink. IDP Smart 21S ID Card Printer Overview The IDP Smart 21S is a compact, entry-level printer built for small organisations, schools, and clubs that want to print ID cards in-house without a big upfront cost. It offers single sided card printing in 24 seconds for full colour and just 6 seconds for monochrome. How It Prints The Smart 21S uses direct-to-card printing. Direct-to-card printing works by pressing the printer ribbon directly against the surface of the card as it passes under the printhead, transferring colour or black text straight onto the card in a single pass. It's the same principle as a thermal transfer label printer, just applied to a plastic card instead of paper. Because the printhead sits right against the card, it's fast and inexpensive per card. The Smart-21 feeds one PVC card at a time, fed in by hand, so it suits steady, on-demand printing rather than large unattended batches. It prints up to 150 full-colour cards an hour or 600 in monochrome, at up to 1200 dpi, which is sharp enough for photo IDs, logos, and small text without looking soft or pixelated. SmartMark comes as standard with most IDP printers. This is a visible security overlay that can be customised with your own text, logo, or design, making a card harder to convincingly copy or tamper with. An optional Kensington lock can also add physical security if the printer's sitting somewhere accessible rather than in a locked office. Is This the Right Printer for You? This printer doesn't encode cards, and it's not suited to access control cards with an embedded chip, the chip can damage the printhead over time. If you need to encode magnetic stripe or contactless cards for door access, look at the IDP Smart 31 instead. If you're printing straightforward photo ID, membership, or visitor cards without encoding, the IDP Smart ID card printer range is an excellent choice. It's one of the easiest-to-use card printers on the market and makes printing staff ID cards a really straightforward process. Software and Compatibility A free copy of EasyBadge Lite card design software comes included with this printer, which is Windows-only, as is the ID printer itself. Please note: ribbons and blank cards aren't included with this printer. Add compatible consumables to your order so you're ready to print as soon as it arrives. Key Features: Direct-to-card, single-sided printing Hand-fed card feeder Print speeds up to 150 full-colour cards/hour, 600 monochrome cards/hour Resolution up to 1200dpi SmartMark visible security overlay, customisable, included as standard Optional Kensington lock Dimensions: approx. 179mm x 169mm x 259mm Weight: 2.7kg 2-year manufacturer warranty (3-year optional extension available; printhead covered for 3 years) Includes EasyBadge Lite design software (Windows only, 100-record limit) Compatible with Windows only What's Included: IDP Smart 21S ID Card Printer ..

Brand: Magicard Model: 316-7300
Magicard Pronto100 ID Card Printer Overview The Pronto100 is Magicard's fastest printer in its smallest package. It's built for small offices, schools, and businesses that need professional ID cards without a large-scale system or costly setup. It's a hand-fed printer able to print a full-colour card in 23 seconds (with a higher-speed colour option with slightly less quality at 18 seconds), and monochrome cards are printed in just 5 seconds. How It Prints The Magicard Pronto 100 uses direct-to-card dye-sublimation printing, applying full colour edge-to-edge onto standard CR80 cards. It's rewritable too, so a card can be wiped and reprinted rather than thrown away when a design needs changing. This is really useful for temporary passes or anything that gets updated regularly. USB and Ethernet connectivity both come as standard, so it fits onto a shared network from day one rather than needing a workaround. Security Built-In as Standard Every Pronto100 includes HoloKote watermarking, which is included on most Magicard printers. HoloKote is a visual security watermark that Magicard prints directly into the design of a card, a faint pattern or logo (there are three standard designs to choose from) that overlays the printed image and makes cards difficult to reproduce or fake. It's there to make a counterfeited or tampered card obvious at a glance, without needing any special equipment to check it. Digital Shredding is also included with this printer, which renders data unreadable after each job to help with GDPR compliance. It's also threat-benchmarked, tested against the same security standards used on Magicard's higher-end printers, so security is not scaled back because it's the smaller model. For an extra security layer, HoloPatch cards are available, which add a reflective security mark that makes cards even more difficult to replicate. Day-to-Day Management Clix, Magicard's remote management interface, lets you monitor supplies, check printer status, and manage maintenance without needing to be standing at the printer itself, which is handy if it's not sitting on your own desk. Is This the Right Printer for You? For standard staff ID, membership, and visitor cards without encoding, the Pronto100 is a fast, easy-to-use choice with lots of features that aren't commonly found in this price bracket. However, as a direct-to-card printer, the Pronto100 isn't recommended for access control cards with an embedded chip; printing directly over a raised chip can damage the printhead. If you need to encode cards for door access, the Magicard 300 is the better starting point. Key Features: Direct-to-card dye-sublimation printing, edge-to-edge Rewritable card support Print speeds: 23 seconds (standard colour), 18 seconds (high-speed colour), 4.7 seconds (monochrome) 50-card input and output hoppers, hand-fed USB and Ethernet connectivity, standard HoloKote watermarking (3 standard designs), o..

Zebra ZC300 ID Card Printer (Single-Sided) Overview The ZC300 is built for organisations issuing ID cards regularly, not occasionally. It has card printing capabilities of up to 900 monochrome cards an hour, or 200 in full colour, so it's designed for keeping up with busy production runs. And at 300dpi edge-to-edge printing, your card design comes out exactly the way you want it every time. It's a strong step up from an entry-level printer without the cost or complexity of an enterprise system. Key Features: Direct-to-card, dye-sublimation thermal transfer printing, edge-to-edge 300dpi resolution Print speeds up to 900 monochrome cards/hour, 200 full-colour cards/hour (single-sided) Dual-sided model: up to 450 monochrome cards/hour, 140 full-colour cards/hour Compatible with CR79 and CR80 cards, including PVC, PVC composite, adhesive-back, and writable-back stock Automatic card thickness adjustment Matched input and output hopper capacity AES data encryption and host authentication for network security Kensington lock point on printer cover Optional magnetic stripe encoding (high and low coercivity) Optional third-party contactless encoding USB and built-in Ethernet connectivity, standard Optional WiFi upgrade Compatible with Windows (including Server editions), Mac, and Linux LCD interface with on-screen design preview Cassette-loaded ribbons for easy changes Saloon-style output doors for quick card removal Dimensions: 258mm (H) x 157mm (W) x 383mm (D) Weight: 4kg (single-sided), 4.4kg (dual-sided) Speed and Card Handling Single-sided, it runs 900 cards an hour in monochrome or 200 in full colour. The dual-sided version manages 450 monochrome or 140 full colour, printing both sides in the same pass. It prints to CR79 and CR80 cards, in PVC, PVC composite, and even adhesive-back or writable-back stock. The feeder adjusts automatically to card thickness, and because input and output hoppers share the same capacity, both empty and refill together rather than one running out before the other. Built-In Security AES data encryption protects card data as it's sent to the printer, and advanced host authentication stops unauthorised devices sending print jobs to it over the network. A Kensington lock point on the printer cover protects both the printer and any card stock or rejected cards inside it, which is vital for protecting information if the printer is sitting in a public-facing space rather than a locked office. Encoding and Connectivity Magnetic stripe encoding (high and low coercivity) and third-party contactless encoding are both available, so the ZC300 can produce access control cards as well as standard photo ID. USB and built-in Ethernet come as standard, with an optional WiFi upgrade if you'd rather avoid running network cable. It's compatible with Windows (including Server editions), Mac, and Linux. Zebra ZC100 ID Card Printer with USB (Single-Sided) The Zebra ZC100 single sided card printer supplied through Plastic-ID as an authorised Zebra dealer, built for organisations printing staff IDs, membership cards or event passes in-house rather than outsourcing to a print bureau. It connects via USB as standard, with Ethernet available as a field upgrade if you need it on the network from day one. Built to replace the ZXP Series 1 The ZC100 is Zebra's direct successor to its ZXP Series 1 card printer and it's genuinely faster: up to 30% quicker in monochrome and 15% quicker in full colour than the model it replaces. If you're comparing specs against an older Zebra printer you've used before, these are the practical differences you'll notice on a daily basis and why upgrading now is a great option. Security features that go beyond a locked drawer AES data encryption protects card data as it's sent to the printer and printer-to-host authentication means only devices the printer recognises can send it a job in the first place, so a laptop plugged in without permission can't start printing your organisation's ID cards. Physically, the printer cover has a Kensington lock point built in, protecting the printer itself and the card stock loaded inside it from theft, useful anywhere it'll sit in an open reception area rather than a locked office. Genuinely simple to run day to day The card feeder adjusts automatically to whatever card thickness is loaded, so there's no manual recalibration switching between card types. The driver interface shows an on-screen preview of your design before it prints, which cuts out the cost and time of repeatedly printing test cards just to check alignment. Ribbon changes are built to be difficult to get wrong and Zebra's own engineering brief for this model was making it the slimmest printer in its class, so it sits comfortably on a reception desk or a shelf rather than needing dedicated floor space. About the Evolis Badgy 200 ID Card Printer Overview of the Badgy200 Card Printer The Badgy 200 is an entry-level, single-sided ID card printer built for organisations with small, regular print runs rather than high-volume production. It produces professional, edge-to-edge PVC cards carrying photos, text, logos, and barcodes. Its quick setup and intuitive interface ensure that no specialist training is needed to get started. Ribbons and blank cards aren't included; add compatible consumables to your order before you check out, so that you're ready to start printing the moment your Badgy 200 printer arrives. Evolis Badgy 200 is ideal for printing a variety of ID cards, such as: Employee badges Student IDs Membership cards Loyalty cards Event passes Business cards How It Works Badgy 200 installs and runs like a standard office printer. Cards load into the feeder and come out through the output hopper, both at the front of the printer, so there's nothing awkward to thread through or configure. Ribbons click into place and are automatically recognised, no manual setup required. Evolis Badge Studio software comes included, giving you a working design tool from the moment it's set up, and a free template library is also available online if you'd rather start from a ready-made design than build one from scratch. Speed and Capacity The Badgy 200 prints up to 95 colour cards per hour, or a single card in around 38 seconds, at 300 dpi resolution. The input feeder and output hopper each hold 25 cards. They're sized for printing on demand and small batches rather than running large overnight batches; load what you need, print it, and top up again for the next run. Brand: Zebra Model: ZC10L-00QT0US00
About the Zebra ZC10L Large Format Card Printer The Zebra ZC10L is a large format plastic card printer suited to use in the hospitality and events sector, lending itself to producing high-quality event passes, delegate badges or visitor badges. The ZC10L is the only direct-to-card printer on the market that is capable of printing full-colour cards with an edge-to-edge print, all in one process! The printer makes it possible to produce event passes that are personalised and printed on the spot for event attendees. Prints on large format cards (approx. 88 x 140mm) Since the printer uses a full-colour print process, each card can be personalised with a photo ID or varying graphics or colours for different delegate types. Furthermore, monochrome black elements such as names, QR codes or 2D barcodes can be printed quickly and at a high quality for easy scanning. Zebra has developed a full-colour ribbon for use with the ZC10L and a monochrome black ribbon. The black ribbon is ideal for adding personalisation to pre-printed cards. Many event organisers also use the black ribbon to pre-print cards with instructions or fine print to the backs of their event badges before the event. Outstanding print quality Thanks to 300dpi print resolution, the ZC10L delivers exceptional image quality, particularly noticeable when printing more complex background graphics and design elements. This allows the user to create stunning badges that event attendees will remember. In addition to this, adding company logos and branding is easy, and your brand will not be compromised by low print quality or inaccurate colours. Reducing waste and saving time Since the ZC10L can print the entire face of the card, for some users, this can eliminate the need for ordering in a stock of pre-printed cards with the design on. As a result, there is less chance of ending up with excess card stock after the event, thus reducing waste and saving money. However, a fast print speed is required for some events that are required to produce larger quantities of passes on the spot. In this instance, we'd recommend ordering in card stock that is pre-printed with your design so that all you need to do is add the monochrome personalisation, like names and QR codes. This saves time because monochrome printing is considerably faster than full-colour printing. Ease of use The ZC10L can be paired with card production software such as CardExchange or Zebra CardStudio (a 30-day free trail is include of CardStudio with this printer) to make badge production stress-free. Designing event badges on card production software is intuitive, and connecting the software directly to a database of event attendees makes card personalisation simple and fast. The printer is reasonably compact and unobtrusive design, allowing it to fit seamlessly into any office environment. The LED display is straightforward to use and makes the navigation of printer settings easier. A large 20..

FARGO INK1000 ID Card Printer Single sided printing The first desktop ID card printer to use inkjet technology Easy to replace cartridges, less wastage – save money 600 x 1200 dpi print resolution Brilliant, accurate colour recreation Compact design for maximum flexibility Optional Omnikey encoding capability The first of its kind. The HID FARGO INK1000 is the first desktop ID card printer to use popular inkjet technology – just like a normal office printer or copier! The printer is easy to use, just like any other inkjet printer, but the difference is that this printer is capable of printing onto ordinary PVC cards. There’s no need to use a specific card type – it will print onto the same PVC cards that you would use with any other plastic card printer. Achieve brilliant colours and print resolution with the FARGO INK1000. 600 dpi x 1200 dpi print resolution makes for crisp text, barcodes and sharp photos. So, what’s the benefit of inkjet technology over dye sublimation? Simply, less wastage, greater sustainability! The ribbon cassettes used in other printers can sometimes result in wasted panels, equalling wasted prints. With inkjet technology, the ribbon cassettes are replaced by efficient ink cartridges, much like a typical office or home inkjet printer. There’s less plastic waste created by using ink cartridges over ribbon cassettes, and makes a more sustainable option for small to medium organisations that don’t print large quantities of cards.  Another benefit of ink cartridges over ribbon cassettes is that instead of data being transferred onto the used ribbon panels, ink cartridges don’t pick up any printed data and therefore eliminate a potential GDPR breach, however small it may be. The INK1000 is a compact and stylish printer with a neutral design that seamlessly blends into any office environment. The printer has an optional OMNIKEY 5127CK-Mini card encoding module that can be used to produce access control cards, cashless vending cards, gift and loyalty cards and much more...
