Retransfer Printers

A retransfer printer prints your card design onto a clear film first, then fuses that film onto the card. That gives crisp edge-to-edge results and sharper detail than a standard direct-to-card machine. You will also see it called reverse transfer printing. The two-stage process suits secure and high-volume work where card quality matters.

The retransfer printers listed here include the Magicard Prima 8, Evolis Agilia, FARGO HDP5000 and HDP6600, Matica XID8100, XID8300 and XID8600, IDP Smart-81 and Swiftpro K30. Both work with standard CR80 cards, the credit card size of 85.6 x 54mm, on the PVC blanks most organisations already use.

The Magicard Prima 4/8 Laminator Uno and Laminator Duo are laminating modules for the Prima 4 and Prima 8. They add a laminating layer over the printed card. The Uno applies film to one side and the Duo to both, so you can build in extra durability and tamper resistance where cards take daily wear. Each printer and laminator is supplied as a single unit.

Retransfer models are also listed alongside direct-to-card machines under single sided ID card printers. If you only need a printer for an event or a short period, see ID card printer rental.

These printers suit organisations wanting professional-grade printing for staff passes, membership cards and access credentials. Add a Laminator Uno or Duo to a Prima when cards need to survive years of scanning and handling, for example on university campuses or across larger sites. If you need compatibility confirmed with your specific card stock or reader technology, we will check that with you directly. The team at Plastic ID can also point you to the right machine and consumables for your volumes.

Brand: Evolis Model: AG1-0001
Evolis Agilia Retransfer ID Card Printer Overview The Evolis Agilia is a high-performance retransfer ID card printer built for organisations that need production-grade print quality, a range of card types, and the flexibility to add encoding and security features as their needs grow. It is available in single-sided (simplex) and dual-sided configurations. What retransfer technology means for your cards With a direct-to-card printer, the print head touches the card surface directly, which limits both quality and the range of cards you can use. The Agilia works differently. It prints first onto a clear retransfer film, then thermally bonds that film to the card. The result is true edge-to-edge coverage with no white border at the card edge, and the 600 dpi print head renders fine details with genuine sharpness: microtext, guilloches and high-definition QR codes all come out crisp and clean. Because the film conforms to the card surface, the Agilia handles cards that would be problematic for direct-to-card printers: PVC, composite PVC, PET, ABS and PC cards all produce the same clean finish, including chip cards and cards with surface irregularities. Card thickness can range from 30 to 50 mil. Colour profiling is built in, so the printer adjusts output to maintain consistent colour across a run, not just across a single card. Print speed, card handling and throughput Single-sided colour printing (YMCK) runs at up to 150 cards per hour; dual-sided (YMCKK) runs at up to 100 cards per hour. A 200-card input feeder and 100-card output hopper mean the Agilia can handle batch jobs without constant reloading, and a 10-card reject hopper keeps the output tray clear of cards that didn't pass inspection. For on-demand issuance, there is also a manual single-card feed option. Ribbons are automatically recognised as soon as they are inserted, so there is no manual configuration when you change consumables. The YMCK ribbon (RT4F101E100) gives 600 colour prints per roll; the dual-sided YMCKK ribbon (RT5F102E100) also yields 600 prints. The retransfer film (RTCL100NAAA) delivers 1,200 prints per roll. You can order all Agilia consumables directly from the Evolis Agilia ribbons page. Encoding, security and upgradeability The Agilia ships as a print-only unit and can be expanded at any point with factory-fit or field-installed options. Encoding choices include a magnetic stripe encoder (ISO 7811, HiCo/LoCo 3-track), a contact smart card encoder, and a dual contactless encoder covering ISO 14443 A/B, ISO 15693, MIFARE and DESFire, making it a practical choice for printing and encoding access control cards in a single pass. Security features go beyond the card itself. Advanced print elements include UV printing (using the YMCFK ribbon), microtext and guilloche patterns that are difficult to copy. Sensitive data can be erased from the printer's memory after each run. An optional electromechanical lock restricts physical access to the card feeder and rib..

Matica XID8600 Retransfer Card Printer Dual Sided

Brand: Matica Model: 37-1420
Matica XID8600 Retransfer ID Card Printer Overview The XID8600 is a 600dpi dual-sided retransfer printer that prints clean, edge-to-edge colour on every card material from standard PVC to polycarbonate. It holds microtext down to 1.3pt on the finished card, sharp enough to carry visual security elements. Organisations printing in the tens of thousands per year, including councils, universities, security contractors, government departments and healthcare trusts, use the XID8600 where card quality and built-in security both have to be right. The image is printed onto a clear film first, and that film is then thermally fused to the card surface. The result is true over-the-edge coverage with no white border, and a surface that is more resistant to wear and UV fade than a direct-to-card print. At 600dpi, the XID8600’s printhead can hold text as small as 1.3pt on the finished card. That matters because fine security detail, such as microtext, guilloche patterns and UV-reactive elements, has to be at a resolution where it reads correctly under magnification and is difficult to reproduce by copying. The 600dpi resolution is also why the XID8600 is used in national ID and driver’s licence programmes, where the card itself is a security document. Contact chips and contactless antennas create a raised or uneven card surface. A direct-to-card printhead can produce an uneven result over the chip area; retransfer covers it cleanly, so the XID8600 prints consistently regardless of what is embedded in the card. Security features and encoding options Built-in printer security: The XID8600 has a Kensington lock slot, an electronic lock and IPsec-encrypted data transfer as standard. Together, th..

Brand: Swiftpro Model: P-SP-7710006148
Swiftpro K30 Retransfer ID Card Printer Overview Cards that carry access credentials, smart chips or detailed security print need a retransfer printer. The chip or antenna sits slightly proud of the card surface, and a printhead moving across it can leave a blemish on the card. Retransfer printing solves this by printing the image onto a clear film first, then fusing that film onto the card. The result is a clean, edge-to-edge finish regardless of surface irregularities. The Swiftpro K30 retransfer ID card printer prints single-sided as standard, with a double-sided upgrade available, at 300dpi and up to 120 full colour cards per hour. It suits corporate ID programmes, healthcare trusts, universities and any organisation that issues smart access cards in volume and needs the print quality and data security to match. Every card comes out with true edge-to-edge coverage and no white border at the card edge. Why it matters for smart cards. Magicard Prima 8 Retransfer Printer The Magicard Prima 8 Retransfer ID card printer is a high-end printer designed for producing high-quality, durable ID cards and inherits the most successful features and outstanding print quality from previous generations. It offers 300 dpi output as standard for sharper images and text, printing capabilities to the edge of the card and robust security features such as UV printing, which uses the specialist YMCK-UV ribbon. With the UV feature, you can print images that are invisible to the naked eye but can be revealed under a UV light source, enhancing card security and preventing cloning.Suitable for corporate, educational, governmental, membership and financial environments, this printer is FIPS 201 compliant and listed on the GSA Approved Product List and supports various encoding options such as magnetic stripe and smart cards (contact / contactless).Reverse-transfer printing is what makes this possible: images are printed onto a thin film first, then heat-transferred onto the card. This gives a print quality comparable to offset litho and works well on uneven surfaces like smart cards. The Prima 8 prints up to 100 full-colour cards per hour, backed by a 100-card input and output hopper for handling volume without constant reloading. It comes with a logical printer lock as standard, a 3-year warranty and lifetime printhead cover and connects via USB or Ethernet for straightforward integration with existing card design software. The Magicard Prima 8 Duo adds double-sided printing at up to 600 dpi, useful when a card needs to carry more than a photo and name on the front, such as terms of use, a barcode or emergency contact details on the back. It still prints up to 100 cards per hour and keeps the same reverse-transfer process, 100-card input and output hopper, printer lock and 3-year warranty with lifetime printhead cover as the single-sided model, so double-sided printing doesn't come at the cost of speed or reliability. Brand: Matica Model: 37-1410
The Matica XID8300 (part number 37-1410) is a mid level retransfer card printer built for organisations that need photographic quality identity cards without moving up to a full industrial system. It uses over-the-edge retransfer technology to print sharp, edge-to-edge full colour images that cover the entire card surface, so there is no white border around the finished card.Ribbons and films for the XID8300 are listed under Matica printer ribbons. This printer suits busy environments such as event accreditation, education, corporate access and membership schemes where personalised passes, badges and secure ID need to be produced on demand. Because retransfer printing works on uneven surfaces, the XID8300 handles contact and contactless smart cards particularly well and holds its clarity even over embedded chips. The metal chassis makes the unit robust and dependable for daily use. Its modular design means you can start single sided then expand later, keeping the XID8300 relevant as your requirements grow. It is available in single sided and double sided configurations, so choose double sided if you need to print information or security features on the reverse. To keep the lifetime printhead warranty in place you should run genuine EDIsecure ribbons and retransfer film. If you are unsure which consumables or configuration match your project, the Plastic ID team can help you specify the right setup. Frequently asked questions What is retransfer printing and why does it matter? Retransfer prints the image onto a clear film first then fuses that film to the card. This produces over-the-edge coverage with no white border and gives noticeably sharper results than direct-to-card printing, especially on smart cards with uneven surfaces. Can the XID8300 print double sided? Yes. The printer is offered in single sided and double sided versions and its modular design lets you add capability as your needs change. Which cards can I use? It accepts standard CR-80 sized cards (85.60 x 53.98 mm) in PVC, ABS, PET and polycarbonate. The 200 card input hopper and 100 card output hopper are rated for standard 0.76 mm cards.
