Print quality and large-format badge design

At 140 × 88mm, a badge from the ZC10L printer has more than twice the surface area of a standard ID card. Staff can read names, access tiers and photographs from across a reception desk or venue entrance without needing to lean in.

The ZC10L uses 300 dpi dye diffusion printing, derived from photo printer technology. This means that background graphics, sponsor logos and portrait photos reproduce with the kind of richness and sharpness that makes a badge look intentional rather than functional.

Colour printing uses a YMCO 4-panel ribbon and covers the full face of the card edge to edge in one pass, with no border and no blank margin. No other large-format direct-to-card printer achieves full bleed in a single printing process. Monochrome printing uses a separate black ribbon and runs at up to 410 cards per hour. Guest names, QR codes and barcodes can be added to a pre-coloured card quickly and at high quality for easy scanning. Ribbon authentication uses RFID technology built into each ribbon roll, so the printer auto-senses the ribbon type and tracks remaining capacity.

The 200-card input hopper means you can load a full batch and step away. The 70-card output hopper holds most of a print run without needing constant attention. At up to 195 full-colour badges per hour, a list of 400 guests takes just over two hours to print, with a single hopper reload halfway through.

Software, connectivity and card design

Card design software is critical for large-format badges because the 140 × 88mm template is not a standard format in generic design tools. CardStudio 2.0 from Zebra Technologies comes as a 30-day trial with the printer and handles the ZC10L's card dimensions natively. It covers graphics placement, text, barcodes and image capture. For organisations with an existing attendee database, the ZC10L pairs with CardExchange, which connects directly to external databases and supports batch printing. The CardExchange ID card software range is also stocked at Plastic-ID and is an excellent upgrade after your trial ends.

USB is the standard connection. If the printer needs to sit on a network rather than a dedicated workstation, an optional external print server adds Ethernet connectivity.

Smart card encoding is available for HF, UHF and dual HF/UHF cards. The ZC10L can print and encode contactless access credentials in the same pass where that is a requirement.

Consumables, warranty and ongoing support

The ZC10L uses its own large-format card and ribbon format, which is not shared with any other printer in the Zebra range. Standard CR80 cards and ZC-series ribbons are not compatible. Genuine Zebra media kits pair a 400-image YMCO ribbon with 400 PVC cards sized for the ZC10L, so ribbon and card stock deplete together and you avoid leftover mismatched supplies. The manufacturer warns that third-party media risks printhead damage and card transport problems. We stock Zebra ZC10L ribbons and media kits, including plain cards, single-slot and dual-slot variants, and the monochrome black ribbon rated for 2,000 prints per roll.

The printer carries a 1-year manufacturer's warranty. For programmes where uptime is critical, the Zebra OneCare Essential 5-year comprehensive service plan covers the ZC10L for accidental damage and normal wear and tear beyond the standard warranty. It must be purchased within 30 days of the printer.
