Standard CR80 cards from an ID card printer are simply too small to carry a photograph, a name, an access tier, branding and a QR code at a size people can read from a distance. Large-scale events, festivals, sporting events, trade shows and conferences can solve this by issuing oversized pre-printed XXL cards that are personalised on the spot. The CX ECP-XL is the Cards-X event card printer built specifically for that workflow. It takes wide pre-printed stock that your supplier or in-house team designs in advance, then prints the variable data (name, photo, barcode, access level) at pace, directly at the accreditation desk.

Card formats and the pre-printed workflow

The ECP-XL accepts pre-printed XXL cards in two sizes: 88 × 124 mm and 88 × 140 mm. Submit your card design to your event card supplier, who prints the background design, branding, event logo, colour zones and access tiers in advance. You load the blanks into the 100-card input hopper and the printer adds the variable data in a CR80-equivalent print zone of 54 × 86 mm.

Three selectable printing positions let you place that zone at the top, centre or bottom of the card, so your pre-printed design determines where the personalisation lands. If you need content on both faces, you can rotate the card by hand and run it through a second time. The accepted thickness range of 0.25 mm to 1.0 mm covers standard PVC event stock and heavier composite cards commonly used for oversized cards to give them more rigidity.

If the badge also needs to control access to backstage zones, media areas or VIP spaces, the optional inline contactless encoding module encodes an RFID or UHF chip during the same print pass. That keeps the accreditation process to a single step rather than two.

Print speed that holds up under event pressure

At 180 full-colour cards per hour, the ECP-XL works through the morning rush at a registration desk without a backlog forming. Switch to monochrome for a crew or staff run and the output climbs to 1,400 cards per hour, fast enough to cover large volumes before doors open. The printer operates at low noise levels, so it sits comfortably at a shared registration counter where staff are simultaneously checking attendees in.

The 300 dpi resolution is consistent across the 54 × 86 mm print area, so photographs come out clearly and barcodes scan reliably. The YMCKO ribbon covers 400 prints per roll and lays down a clear overlay that protects the print from handling and moisture during the event. That also means passes hold up well as souvenirs long after the event.

The plug-and-play driver installs without IT involvement on both Windows and macOS, and the on-board display makes the printer straightforward to operate for event crew who haven't used it before. USB is the standard connection; Ethernet is available as an optional upgrade for setups where the printer needs to sit on a network rather than tethered directly to a laptop.

Warranty and ongoing supplies

The ECP-XL carries a two-year manufacturer's warranty. For consumables, the printer uses ECP-series YMCKO colour ribbons (400 prints per roll) and ECP-series monochrome ribbons (1,000 prints per roll). Monochrome is the practical choice for name-only crew passes where colour is not needed; YMCKO is the right option for full-colour photo badges.

The CX ECP-XT event badge printer is the lower-cost entry point in the ECP range. It handles extra-long cards up to 54 × 140 mm, the tall portrait shape that suits lanyard-hung badges at conferences and exhibitions. The CX ECP-CR100 event card printer takes CR100-format stock up to 98 × 67 mm, which is a mid-size option between a standard ID card and full XXL. The ECP-XL sits above both when the widest badge format, and the visibility that comes with it, is what your event requires.
