Print quality, speed and card security

The photos on ID cards need to be recognisable at a glance, and at 300 dpi, the image quality on the Sigma DS2 comes out with sharp edges and accurate skin tones. The 225 cards per hour single-sided rate keeps up with a sustained morning run of new passes without queuing staff. If you print both sides, the printer handles up to 140 dual-sided cards per hour using a YMCKT-KT ribbon. This ribbon offers full-colour printing on the front and a black resin pass on the back for small print, lost card information or health and safety instructions.

Luster printing adds a visible security layer directly to the card surface without a laminator. The luster ribbon panel applies a translucent mica shimmer that is visible under normal light and under UV to deter counterfeiting without the cost of a separate lamination module.

Optional pre-loaded ribbon cassettes make changing a ribbon as simple as dropping in a new cassette rather than threading anything by hand. The cassette design also shields the printhead during ribbon changes, so it helps extend the printhead’s service life.

Security architecture: Secure Boot, TPM and encrypted data transfer

Card issuance involves personal data moving between your software and the printer, and the DS2 is built to keep that data contained. The Trusted Platform Module manages the printer’s own TLS certificates and keys. Data between software and printer travels encrypted over TLS 1.2 or 1.3, and cardholder data is not stored in the printer once a print job is complete.

Secure Boot cryptographically authenticates the printer’s firmware on startup. If unauthorised modifications are detected, the printer will not operate. For networked environments, Zero Trust support via IEEE 802.1x password or certificate-based authentication allows the printer to participate in a RADIUS-controlled network.

The printer dashboard is accessible from a mobile device (iOS, Android or Windows). From there you can see printer status, check whether a consumable is running low, trigger a cleaning cycle, or update firmware without touching the printer itself. Magnetic stripe encoding covers ISO 7811 three-track in both high- and low-coercivity, plus JIS Type II single-track. That makes it suitable for access and time-and-attendance systems built around magnetic stripe credentials.

Smart card encoding covers both contact (ISO 7816) and contactless formats including ISO 14443, ISO 15693, MIFARE and HID iClass. This makes it a practical choice for organisations that need to print and encode access control cards in a single pass rather than in two separate steps.

The printer supports on-premises and cloud-hosted deployment. USB and Ethernet are standard. Wi-Fi is an optional factory-fitted upgrade, and it adds the ability to print from a mobile device without a wired connection.

The variable LED light ring around the printer can be set to your organisation’s brand colour. It also changes colour to flag printer alerts, so the status is visible from across a room without needing to check a dashboard.
